Traffic Regulation Order (TRO):


We have received the consultation papers for the TRO to move the 30mph speed limit further out of the village to incorporate the new developments.

Although the consultation has a closing date for comments of 27th February, the Parish Council have been allowed an extension to enable an agenda item for discussion at the March meeting.  Therefore, if you have any comments you wish to make, please submit them directly to ADL before the 27th February or to the Parish Council before the 6th March.   

The second village gateway will be sited at the new 30mph zone, as noted on the traffic calming plans, as above.

Traffic Calming Schemes:

February 2024 Update:

Herefordshire Council awarded Fownhope a Traffic Calming Grant of £175,000 which is to be delivered by BBLP week commencing 12th February 2024. The letter distributed to residents and businesses explaining the closure can be downloaded here: BBLP Letter January 2024 (please note the road closure from Monday 12th February to Sunday 18th February is between 8am and 5pm, and from 9.30am to 3pm Monday 19th February to Friday 23rd February).

Based upon proposals made by the Highways Working Group, Herefordshire Council have approved a scheme which includes:

  • Verge narrowing programme through the village;

  • Road markings through the village;

  • Widening the pavement from the West End Stores towards the new developments.

  • Extending the 30mph speed limit to include access to the new developments at Mill Field and Old Potato Barn

Earlier works:

Just before the end of 2019, new 30 mph repeater signs and re-painted roundels were installed throughout the village, new 'Dragons Teeth' markings were painted on both entrances to the village on the B4224 and the installation of new village gateways were approved, again at both entrances to the village on the B4224.  The majority of the works have been completed, though we are waiting for the completion of the two new developments before installing the second set of gateways.

An application for a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) was refused by Herefordshire Council. The TRO had requested a speed assessment of the B4224 with a view to reducing the speed limit between Fownhope and Mordiford to 40mph; to extend the 30mph zone to incorporate the various junctions at Nash Pitch and Hawkers Lane; to reduce the national speed limit from Nash Pitch to the 50mph zone at Falcon Brook, How Caple; and to reinstate or site a 'Weight Restriction' sign at Old Gore Crossroads and the shortcut further along to inform drivers of heavy vehicles accessing Hereford from the M50. 


SID Data

Herefordshire Council advise that the protocol for the operation of Speed Indicator Devices within the county should operate on a one month on, two months off policy. However, data is collected from the Speed Indicator Devices whether the equipment is operating or on standby. This data is collated and reported and can be downloaded as an Excel spreadsheet by clicking the links below:

Multi Parish Strategy Group

We have been working closely with Herefordshire Council and other parish councils along the B4224 to address the issue of traffic - volume, speed and weight - along the length of the B4224. In 2020, a Strategy Group was formed to research and progress actions that help to address the concerns of each parish.

In September 2022, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the parishes – Hampton Bishop, Dormington and Mordiford, Fownhope, Brockhampton, and How Caple Group - and Herefordshire Council. The agreement was to work together to understand the concerns of communities about the volume, weight and speed of traffic using the B4224;· identify and prioritise the actions that might be taken by the members of the group, or others to mitigate impacts; and seek to identify the resources needed to take action.
